My name is Gary Skipton. I was born in a small town just outside of Bournemouth on the south coast of England.
I have been working in the television industry pretty much from the moment I finished A-Levels at 18.
My first job was at the production company Mentorn Films on Wardour St.. in London’s Soho. I worked there as an Assistant Tape Librarian and was quickly promoted to be a Studio Assistant in a new studio. It was built to make programmes for Channel 5 and NBC Europe.
After 18 months I decided to head back to the south coast and was lucky enough to work on a live programme based in the largest teaching hospital in Europe: Southampton General Hospital – “City Hospital”. Here I worked as a ‘VT op’ and Linear Tape Editor, hitting the play button when the director shouted “roll vt” in live transmissions and editing stories that were run from those tapes.
I then spent a while at Meridian Television, as an Avid editor working on a variety of programmes, mainly for UK network transmission. After 18 months I was asked to go and work on a popular BBC programme made in Bristol and I have been there ever since. I have been fortunate to work across a huge variety of genres including documentaries, cooking shows, factual entertainment and reality series to name just a few; as well as spending some time in Australia working for a broadcaster out there.
